Tangy

Olga and Lukin leaned over the parapet to watch a great brown griffin come gently to the ground beside Wizard Policant's statue and fold her cream-barred wings down on her lion's back. She towered above the statue.

”That,” Lukin said, awed, “must be quite the biggest griffin ever. I think her name's Callette.”

-Year of the Griffin
by Diana Wynne Jones

When I heard about the death of Diana Wynne Jones, far and away my favorite author, I felt at a loss. I had never met her personally, but her books touched my life in many ways. This shawl was born from that first day when the news broke, when I needed something to throw myself into wholeheartedly. I think Mrs. Jones would approve of creating something beautiful out of grief.

The shawl itself is almost a wrap, knit in cozy worsted-weight wool - superwash for durability, warmth, and easy care. The unique cast-on design, knit sideways from each end, gives it a trapezoidal wing-like shape, and the simple lace pattern creates beautiful feathery chevrons. Finally, simple intarsia forms the characteristic bars of the wings. None of the techniques in this pattern are particularly advanced, but add them all together and they make for a challenging, rhythmic knit!

PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

OF (Open Feather, worked over 11 sts): Yo, k4, S2KP2, k4, yo.

CF (Closed Feather, worked over 11 sts): LLI, k4, S2KP2, k4, RLI.

RLI (Right Lifted Increase): Use the right needle to pick up the stitch below the next stitch on the left needle. Place it on the left needle, then knit into it. 1 stitch has been increased.

LLI (Left Lifted Increase): Use the left needle to pick up the stitch 2 rows below the last stitch on the right needle. Knit into this stitch. 1 stitch has been increased.
(In this pattern, you will be working both a RLI increase and a LLI increase in the same stitch.)

A tutorial for the increases listed above can be found here.

S2KP2: Slip next 2 sts together, knitwise, as if to work a k2tog. Knit next st, then pass both slipped sts together over st just knit. This forms a centered double decrease.

Cable Cast On:
The cable cast on method is recommended for this project. Instructions for this technique can be found here and here.

Intarsia:
This pattern involves the Intarsia method of color work. When working in this way, different sections of each row are worked with different colors or balls of yarn. For this pattern, it is necessary to use a different ball of yarn for each area of color.

When beginning with a new color, tie the strand of the new color in a slip knot around the strand of the old color. Slide the knot up close to the needle, then proceed with the new color.

When switching from one yarn to the next within each row, drop the color you have been knitting with, and bring the yarn for the next color up under the yarn of the previous color before you continue knitting. This will twist the 2 yarns around each other. It is very important to do this; if you do not wrap the yarns in this way, the areas of color will not be joined, and you will have holes in your work.

The finishing work for this project will be easier if you weave in ends as you go, using the technique illustrated here.

Ends may be woven in in the same way when working WS rows; just be sure the yarn is always held to WS of work.

Instructions for grafting can be found here.

Instructions for grafting without a tapestry needle can be found here.

Information about blocking can be found here, here, here, and here.

DIRECTIONS
FIRST WING
Before beginning, wind one skein each of MC and CC into four balls or bobbins. Short bobbins will work well for CC, but MC will work best if the skein is wound into four balls of approximately equal size.
The four balls of MC yarn will be referred to as MC1, MC2, MC3 and MC4. Switch balls when indicated to maintain the pattern. Use separate balls of CC for each section of CC within a row. Balls of CC are not numbered.

Use cable cast on method for this project (see Pattern Notes).

Unless otherwise indicated, work each section of each WS row using the same ball of yarn as was used for that section in the preceding RS row.

FINISHING
Graft sts of first wing to sts of second wing. Weave in ends.

Before blocking, weave long pieces of smooth waste yarn through columns between feathers formed by yarnovers and lifted increases. Block to measurements shown, stretching these lengths of waste yarn taut to keep feathers straight. Tips of feathers may be pinned into points (as shown) or curved scallops. See Pattern Notes for more information about blocking.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Carolyn is a rising fourth-year college student at the University of Chicago who loves children's books a little too much. Aside from knitting, she likes dolls, reading, and Doctor Who. Now that books and knitting have combined, her fandoms seem to be plotting together to eat all of her time and money. This is her first time designing anything larger than a hat.

You can find her on Ravelry as Babelglyph and babelglyph.com.
