INTRODUCTION

A Bit of Funk

beauty shotby

Piquant

This long cardigan was requested by my mother. She told me she was done being normal and from now on she was going to wear clothes that didn’t even try to be normal. I tried to satiate her appetite for weirdness (she does have a denim, lace, and leopard-print skirt she wears regularly) while designing something that won't embarrass my kids.

Long and lacy, this sweater has a peaked collar supported at the back of the neck by corrugated rib. The sleeves are started from the cuffs, and the back and fronts are worked separately from the bottom-up. Short rows shape the points at the hem of each front. Twin cables at the back pinch in during waist shaping, creating an hourglass effect.

To keep it light, I used a smaller weight yarn than I normally would with US #10/6mm needles: a handspun double-ply yarn that used a woolen preparation (undyed drum carded batts) and a worsted draw to maintain smoothness.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]

IMPORTANT: Please read through the entire pattern before beginning this project.

As this sweater is very long, I strongly recommend weighting your gauge swatch and making any changes necessary to the number of rows worked throughout in order for it to properly fit the wearer without sagging or slumping.

Since the pocket is worked first, it makes an excellent gauge swatch.

FINISHING

Wash and block pieces, blocking Fronts over the Back and smoothing side selvages to ensure smooth seaming.

Join shoulders using Kitchener stitch. Join side seams. Pin BO edge and side edges of collar in place around neck, matching center of collar to center of back neck. Slip stitch in place on WS of body using crochet hook.

Sew in sleeves, gathering any excess fabric at top of sleeve and easing to fit. Join sleeve seams from markers to underarm, leaving ribbing open.

Sew lace trim to hem, then on sleeves along openings at each side of rib and along sleeve cuffs. Sew sleeves shut at rib as follows:

Right Sleeve
Lay lace edge of right edge of rib over left edge and sew in place. Secure four buttons evenly spaced across rib placket, placed approximately 3 sts in from edge.

Left Sleeve
Lay lace edge of left edge of rib over left edge and sew in place. Secure four buttons evenly spaced across rib placket, placed approximately 3 sts in from edge.

Sew clasps in place on front.

Embroidered Rose
If desired, using yarn needle and scrap MC, embroider a spiral on the pocket using chain stitch, using photo for guidance. Make French knot above spiral for leaf.

Line Pocket if desired and sew to Right Front, using photo for guidance. Secure button to Right Front beneath Pocket buttonhole.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

designername Tara Daun is a fiber-obsessed environmentalist. She maintains her sanity while caring for two toddlers (and husband) by taking care of 6 sheep, 2 alpaca, and an angora rabbit and then processing all of their fiber by hand and turning it into yarn, finished knits, felt, and garden mulch. Tara started spinning her own yarn as an attempt to slow down her pace of finishing projects and thereby reducing her need to buy so much yarn. Someone maybe should have warned her that paying for the farm ends up being more expensive than a few trips to the local yarn shop.

To see pictures of her animals and updates on current projects, you can find her farm on Facebook or buy her yarns and finished projects at the Etsy shop. She's on Ravelry, too.
