I knew something wasn't right

You know I'm a gear ho™, right? One of the reasons I love the Olympics, especially the winter Olympics, is the Roots gear they've made for the Canadian team in recent years. Especially the poorboy in 1998.

I saw the upcoming team's gear and thought...that's not quite right. But the big fuzzy hat is okay. And now I know why: it's designed by HBC, the people behind The Bay. My least favorite department store. It's bland. It's okay. It's not very cool.

Hub reminds me that The Hudson's Bay Company is more Canadian than Roots is. I will argue that they WERE, but they haven't been very Canadian for a long while. Plus, honestly, Roots is just cooler. And if you ask me to pick one reason why...it comes back to my roots. It's the typeface. You can make or break ANY swag with the typeface. There is no funk in that all-cap face.

Comments:
Olympic gear, I can take it or leave it. But I agree, not as cool as Roots.

HBC must have used a truck full of money to win the bid for this.

The models in those (awful!) Canada jerseys look so very bored, and slightly disgusted. How appropriate.

ha! that's so true. they do look rather bored and disgusted.

i'm sorry about your disappointment.

Crystal Siemens. Tu Ly, who used to work for Roots.

And yet, *that* happened.

Maybe Tu Ly was afraid he'd be accused of riffing too much off Roots, so he wanted to make it look very, um, different.

I hope the opening ceremony uniforms are better. These outfits look like something someone would wear while shlumping around the mall. I'm sure the US uniforms will be similar.

Hey... HBC has the contract until 2012.

There might not *be* an HBC in 2012. It might have been taken over and stripped for parts by then.

Who'll be the last Canadian department store chain standing? Ogilvy's? Holt Renfrew?

I agree...Roots is way cooler and what the heck with those hats? I'm sure they are really fuzzy and drop lint all over your hair too..yikes!

I remember my first trip to TO as a kid and seeing the Roots store at the Eaton Centre; I've been coveting Roots stuff ever since.

I think that the trouble with Roots is that they started doing the American, UK, Jamaica AND Barbados teams uniforms as well. You have to admit the last summer Olympics stuff sucked -- everything looked the same! I miss the days when Roots only did the Canadian uniforms, the way it should be.

No wonder they lost the bid to HBC. They no longer had the money or creative resources to outbid The Bay.

I have to agree though. I saw the Turino line of clothes in the Bay yesterday. It's "okay". Nothing I have to have, unlike the Salt Lake City stuff, when I wanted everything.

kelly, i totally agree. the SLC stuff made me crazy and i have a few bits of it. last summer, not so much. still, i bet they would have done better than HBC and their crew.

sigh.

Sure the Olympic wear from Hbc doesn't look the greatest but if you actually try the stuff on they look not too bad. I'm proud that Hbc, the oldest Canadian company, is sponsoring the Olympians this year, and I think all of you Canadians out there should be proud as well. If Hbc does end up being sold then so be it. Roots did have beautiful Olympic wear, but when they started doing the uniforms for every other country they lost their connection with Canadians. Now that we have our own company supporting our great athletes lets be proud and stand up for our company, athletes, and our country.
