better together!

You know when you look at a book on Amazon.com...and they try to sell you another to go with it? How do they pick what goes with what?

For example, look what I found when I was checking the No Sheep page today [I do that obsessively now, because stock should arrive any day and I'm dying to see when it will actually ship]:

Look, Steph, we're supposedly better together. Perhaps that means that the nakedness of my cover model is well balanced by your own fully clothed self. Perhaps it's because my non-wool book is a fitting counterpoint to the wool-centric writings of Ms Harlot. Perhaps it's a crapshoot marketing technique Amazon thinks sells more books [hint: bing bing bing! we have a winner!]

[Clearly I am working very hard to find reasons to post instead of doing my work. Bad, bad me.]

Perhaps because Amazon knows they'll both be a smashing success!

I read NSFY and first think "Not Safe For You?" "Not Safe For Yarn?" I'm reading too many media blogs these days...

For the record, I've never had one of your cupcakes and I like you! May I have a cupcake now? ;-)

My feeling is that Amazon is a for-profit business that sells books, whereas knitting is just a wonderful activity. When the two come together they don't always make good sense. But hey, obsess away. I live with an author who does exactly that. Do you also obsessively google reviews of your work? It's really good for the skin-thickening program. :-)

Heh heh, isn't that cool? My boss published a book and we're constantly checking to see what they're pairing it with... I think it's an awesome compliment to both of y'all that people who are buying those books recognize the quality of both!

ps: Drunken Knitting! Now with our OWN BLOG! And we don't even ask you for cupcakes :)

no no no It's because you both know me...

I had my people make some calls, I told them these are MY people ,people.

I told my people to get it together with your people, to show the work of MY people to all people.

see it's just that simple.

and so am I.

Amy they have "gum" trees down under.

The LYS I work at just got the book. I am in love with the Jenna Wilson sweater. It's magnificent. Also love the shawl you did in Handmaiden. Congrats on a great book.

Perhaps it is because you are both bloggers who write books and have more talent than the law allows.

Now turn all the cupcakes over to me!

The yarn shop (www.knotanotherhat.com) that I work for got the book on Thursday. We had a lot of fun looking over the book. Just about everybody who came into the shop had to look through it too. It is an awesome book that I am sure will be added to my knitting library.

Heya! Your blog is on the RSS feed for my livejournal, which I won't point you to, because nothing much ever happens there. This morning I am looking at a totally spammed LJ, with every post you've made from January 4th on. Somebody's finger tripped on the way to hitting return, I'm guessing??? Since I woke up at chicken-thirty, as is the wont at my peri-menopausal stage in life, I want neither spam nor cupcakes. Enjoy your blog, even if I do love sheep! Keep on purlin'.

you guys are sweet. thank you!

and pamela, i switched to new blogger with this post, and i guess that's why you got a spammed LJ. sorry about that!

SPOILER ALERT! Sometimes these "better together" parings are paid for by publishers, believe it or not. This isn't always the case, but they CAN be bought. Just remember, nothing at Amazon (or other bookseller chains) is free!

oh, i have no delusions that this is anything but a marketing strategy. whether it's amazon's attempt to match up books to sell both instead of just one, or a pairing paid for by (both? since steph and i have different ones) publishers, it's all about commerce.

no. It's all about me.

It's 2 new knitting books by Torontonians (or whatever the proper term is for folk from Toronto). That's why they are together.

Why would you complain if it sells your books?

who said i'm complaining? i'm just noticing.

[someone has their crankypants on today, eh?]

me me me

Those Amazon pairings are bought. I believe anyone can buy them if you are a member of Amazon Affiliates.
