Thank you, Grandma

My grandma Lillian [the best grandma in the world] died in 1999 and she left all her grandkids something. I could barely look at the check when it came. I bawled like a baby when I opened a savings account to hold it, because I knew it was stupid not to cash it, but I couldn't bear to touch it. I suppose I'm not the only person to cry in a bank manager's office.

It's been 8 years. I started thinking recently that maybe it was time to turn her last gift into something tangible. Something I've wanted for a very long time, but never really allowed myself to consider. Because it's not a frivolous purchase, but it's not a necessity, either. It's a big deal.

And now it's mine.

A real Vespa [LX 150, Portofino Green] from Motoretta, a place I've looked at with longing for years. [I used to walk into the one on College, look around and sigh audibly.] I'll get it in a few days. First I have to pass my M1 written test at the Ministry [of magic?]. Then the dealers get a license plate for it. Then I get to learn how to ride it.

In the late 1990s, I had a moped, and rode it carefully and well. I avoided streetcar-track streets, rode in the defensive position of the appropriate lane and really liked being able to get all over with it. But it was a spotty thing that only ran when it felt like it and only that if I rode it daily. I sold it for a bit more than what I paid for it and that was that.

This is a cadillac compared to that Honda Moped. It's also much more environmentally friendly than a vintage Vespa [in fact, this page tells me it puts out much less carbon dioxide than a hybrid car. It gets 72mpg. Wow. I looked into electric, but the technology just isn't there yet. Maybe in a few more years, but right now, the bikes are cheap and plasticy and not worth buying.

I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I wonder what grandma would have thought of my choice. I expect she'd just tell me to be safe and careful, and I promise I'll be doing that. I'll be taking a scooter safety course within the next month, because that's how I do things.

I'm also really excited because a simple google search showed me that I can park my new baby for free on the street where the Pay-and-Display meters are in Toronto. Thank you, Toronto City Council. Smart move.

So there you go. I now have my own wheels and don't need to take the car [an efficient small Subaru, but still] for my trips to the beach, to jewelry class and to Lettuce Knit every week. I can park just about anywhere, spit less CO2 into the air, all while riding the bike of my dreams.

Thank you, Grandma.

p.s. yes, Grandma Lillian is the grandma -- the one Knitty is dedicated to, the one who taught me to knit and the one whose needles are on every page. :-)

Ooh! I just want to pat its metal tush. So cute! I'm glad you bought it.

It's adorable! I've always wanted a vespa, but it's not terribly practical right now. Enjoy it!

Congratulations! It' gorgeous--I want to see pictures of you riding soon!

Congrats! I hope you love it just as much as I love my Vespa!

That's awesome! I too am at the stage where I wander through the dealership and sigh....

Congratulations on your new wheels.

Are you getting the green? It's pretty.

Love and Laughter,
Amy

Congratulations! Have fun, be safe and enjoy. I have an Aprilia and I love it - don't ride it nearly as much as I should, but it's a hoot! Good for you for taking the saftely course - I did that too, and it was well worth it.

If I recall, it was your Gram who taught you how to knit, right? I'd think she'd be so darned proud of what heights you've taken that to (!!!!) that she'd be equally overjoyed to have you indulge in this very cute/ very enviro-friendly/ totally practical set of wheels. I miss my Gram every day (the other best grandma in the world, but luckily there's lots of ties in that department) and love that I have my own special things to remind me of her. What a great thing to get on your Vespa everyday thankful for having such a woman in your life!

How very awesome!

Awesome! So are you going to knit a cover for it?

Seriously, when Ging-ging, my gradmother, died while I was in high school, my family inherited her television. Her two joys in the final years of her life were visiting with friends and family and watching TV, particularly CNN and the OJ trial.

She had cataracts, so we bought her a huge TV. With all the HD stuff that's out now, it seems archaic, but back then it was one of the best you could buy.

So I felt guilty when we inherited this gigantic television, better than anything my family would have bought on their own. Every time someone would come over and comment on our nice TV, I always felt obligated to say, "Yeah, but I'd rather have Ging-ging back."

Now that the TV is pretty much dead, and headed for Craigslist or Goodwill. I think she would be glad we enjoyed it. And I think your grandma would be glad that her gift is going to bring you some joy.

Congrats! How fun.
Today I was wearing a Vespa t-shirt, the same color as your new scooter...spooky ;-)

My gran's legacy was, I suspect, just a leetle smaller. But I used it to frame a piece of art I had, and it has lived over my mantle for more than a decade. I look at it every day and still love it. And I thank her quietly for wishing good things for me.

(Now you have to choose matching leathers - oooh! And a helmet -maybe with ears ;-D)

Enjoy. You chose well.

Can you hear me shrieking with envy from there? Motoretta is a place both fabulous and evil...

I love Vespas. May you enjoy every minute on it!

Mom had a Vespa. Highly recommended :)

Congrats and hugs,
Anne aka roxy

Deluri\king to say how jealous I am. I so love those...

*blush* I can spell lurking, I just can't type.

Yeah for you! You got your grandma's knitting needles too, didn't you, the ones we see on knitty? Was that the same grandma? Have fun!

oooh! I have one! I have a Vespa GT 200 (Granturismo). In fact, I've been riding it all over Black Hills this last week as I've been on a scooter vacation!

Take a motorcycle safety course if you can. I took mine on a scooter and learned a lot!!

We have so much in common. I knit, have a house bunny, and now we both have scooters! Do you use a Mac?

It's beeeoooooteeeful!

I see a knitted scooter cosy in your future! Nice ride.

But, seriously, are you sure she wouldn't have wanted you to use the money to buy more yarn?

Damn that's cute.

Very cool--I think Grandma would approve because it makes you happy.

I have a helmet--can I ride on the back?

And, people cry in banks all the time. For the same reasons you did.

Congrats! That is awesome!!! I would love to have a Vespa :)

I love my Vespa, you will too! And there is a knitters with scooters group in ravelry. I think they use your scoot or one like it in the group badge.

That is one badass mode of transportation. I obviously didn't know your grandmother, but I'll bet it would have made her smile.

Hi Darlin!

After our second Vespa was stolen, we made the difficult decision not to get another. (I'm still cursing the horrilbe person who took my wheels.)

But, there's a cover that needs a good home. And maybe a helmet if I can locate it. Interested?

beth -- where do you live that people double-steal vespas? crap crap. that sucks.

i might need a cover, though. write me at amy aT knitty, etc., okay?

thanks!

Hey Dr. Steph can I borrow your helmet and have a ride around the block too. yee haa .

cool toy.( we must bungy the spinning wheel on the side, back??)

oooh! wait til you come visit me at my new shop, we've got a vespa (+ others) dealership across the street! they've got all kindsa fun accessories...

COME VISIT ME.
BRING DENNY.
BRING EVERYONE.

xoxoxoxox

Rock on girl!!!

Ohhhhh, Amy. I'm sure Grandma Lillian would be thrilled. I know I am.

Wow... that's my dream too. However in Quebec i will need to pass my motorcycle (yes!) course and get a license for it... And since i just finished a navigation (boating course of 33 hrs no less) i thought this was enough.. but it is still on my dream list.

Awesome! I've always wanted to ride one of those. Around here, it's not too practical, since everything is soooo spread out, plus it would make it hard to haul home groceries for four. Enjoy!

I felt that way after my grandfather died. I think it took me a while to get in and deposit it. Money was welcome, but I didn't want it *that way*. That piece of paper and the money it represented was just a reminder of how much I wanted (and still want) my grandpa back.

I haven't spent it, yet - it's invested very nicely, and will eventually become a piano. My grandpa would heartily approve of that, I know; music was one of his loves.

I used to drive a ridiculously cute scooter. (Mine was green and Italian, too, but rarer.) Then I sold it and got a motorcycle. :D (Which I can park for free around here, and which also runs on no fuel at all, I swear.)
