Toronto central/east-enders unite!

Help stop the possible invasion of our area by big box stores like W*l-m*rt by signing this letter, if you agree with its contents. The full story is here.

We've got enough of this stuff at Eglinton Avenue and further north. We don't need any more characterless shopping in an area that could be revitalized a hundred different -- and BETTER -- ways. Plus we know what happens to small businesses when big box stores open nearby, and losing the character of Leslieville and the Beach would be a disaster for this city.

Thank you for listening. :-)

It's possible. They HAVE been stopped before. Right here in my little town of Eureka, CA. Walmart wanted it and we said no! Recording artist, Laura Love, wrote a song about it called "Sometimes Davey Wins" and you might find it inspirational. You can hear it for free at: http://music.aol.com/song/sometimes-davey-wins/3069865

Sorry...that link wasn't working. But you can hear it via rhapsody at http://play.rhapsody.com/lauralove/fourteendays/sometimesdaveywins?rhapsodyInstalled=4.0.2.610

You're anti-big box stores but you love Target? (Don't worry, I h8 W*l-m*rt too. Not just because I work at Target, but especially because I work at Target. Target pays me more than other stores ever would).

I wish you luck. Years ago a W*l-m*rt was proposed here. People protested like crazy. There were tons of letters to the editor, petitions, you name it. They opened the store anyway. I don't shop there.

I love Target because a) they give back to the community, b) pay their employees better (i didn't know that until you just told me, though :-), and c) don't force themselves in central city locations. I don't hear stories about Target forcing companies out of business by paying what THEY want, not what the company needs to keep going.

The mayor and the city are against it -- maybe that will help our case.

Sigh.

We live in Leaside and the developement you're referring to is owned by Smart Centres. Watch yourself and your City Councillor. The big box isn't just going to take away from the local shops -- it adds traffic, discourages pedestrians, and then Smart Centre will start changing his rules of engagement while the City is stuck with theirs. Suburban development in an urban setting shouldn't be allowed.

don't forget that to some people big box stores are AFFORDABLE. many working people cannot afford to be as discerning as you, and furthermore cannot easily go up to eglinton if they don't have cars. i'm sick of people saying that this kind of thing shouldn't be downtown. local small businesses carry sweatshop-made clothing the same way w-mart does, and at higher prices.

how fortunate that your neighbourhood has so much 'character' that its residents don't can worry about optics rather than cost.
