keep *$ out of Kensington Market, please.

If you're interested in the backstory, here's a column in the National Post: Venti battle brews in Kensington. I don't like the Post, and I disagree with the conclusion of the columnist, but I link to it on purpose here.

Backstory: I drink Starbucks. I am very fond of their summer drinks and when it gets cold, one of their flavored lattes makes me happy. I know what good coffee is having had the real stuff in Italy, and I know that Starbucks isn't it. But it makes do, and it's consistent. I can count on it.

I've written each of my 4 books in the Starbucks at Hammersmith on Queen St in Toronto. I can concentrate better there.

Clearly, I'm not anti-Starbucks.

But I am anti-Starbucks-in-Kensington-Market.

Kensington Market is about individuality, small business and history. It's not about chain shops of any kind, imo. I don't think of Second Cup as a chain shop, even though it is. I'd rather it not be there, but it is. I suppose it's pretty telling that no one considers Second Cup a threat, but people are paying attention when Starbucks wants in.

If you want a Starbucks beverage while knitting at Lettuce Knit, you can get one by walking 5-10 minutes in any direction. But maybe you want to try I deal Coffee instead. Or Moonbean. Or that new juice bar that's a few doors south of Big Fat Burrito. Or have a fresh juice blend from Rice in a biodegradable cup that might start melting as you drink it [but the Digestive blend, despite the name, is worth the risk of drippage]. There are a lot of choices, and none of them bring worldwide baggage along.

I don't want a posh cafe in Kensington Market. A few chairs outside, a great espresso machine + someone who knows how to use it inside -- that makes good coffee that suits the neighborhood. But, see, we've already got that several times over. We don't need Starbucks there with piles of their corporate glossy signage, and I for one hope they go elsewhere. Or maybe be content with their shops on almost every block in the city center.

Right on! Let's keep Kensington market safe from the invasive mass-market chains. It's a slippery slope. First *$, then what's next? Wal-mart?

Moonbean gets my biz whenever I'm nearby. They're so reasonably priced (a measly $4 for a latte/cappucino so big you could bathe in it!) and I love the wide diversity of healthy and decadent treats they offer. The jars of loose tea on the wall always fascinate me and I love their vibe and the choice of different rooms for cafe hanging out, as well as the back patio and street front seating.

I'm with you here: I also am rather fond of *$, in it's place (practically everywhere, for Toronto), but in Kensington I'd rather see the indy shops keep their space, unique and vibrant.

all I have to say is damn skippy... I enjoy SB occasionally but don't like it on every block, especially in a historic, local area. Thanks for the article link.

I'm not against Starbucks, per se, but I am against them moving into areas already served by a coffee shop, locally owned and operated, with the express intent of taking their business and shutting them down. It happened in the town I live in and it was a shame. They not only came to town (a small town) but into the same shopping center, down at the other end, when there were numerous other centers they could have built in. I don't agree with that sort of aggressive business tactic.

Many moons ago there was a second Cup in Kensington (across the street from European Meats on the SW corner)and it failed b/c only the Tourists went there. Fingers crossed this will happen again if 5bucks manages to weasel their way in.

there's a petition going in all the shops in Kensington. Come and sign it, lady!

I've got a love/hate with SB. They will make my daughter a steamed soymilk for a dollar but they have also invaded my neigbourhood (the beach) affecting the business that could go to independent retailers like Zane (heavenly) or The Remarkable Bean (old school sit all day, read a book, knit, melt into the chair and have them roast you some custom beans).

As for preserving neighbourhoods, that's up to the people in and around them. If a SB opens and enough people go to it, it will stay.

Oh, that's TERRIBLE. Visiting the Market is my favorite part of coming to Toronto (great yarn store? check! yummy food? check! atmosphere? check!) -- it would be terrible to have a slick, shiny Starbucks there. Bah!

I'm a little behind on your blog here, and I just posted practically the same sentence on MY blog; "I'm not anti-Starbucks, I'm anti-Starbuck in Kensington"! Glad to see we all agree!
