wow.

You guys are great. I loved reading [and cheering for] all your votes and hearing about what it was like at the polls for you. Maybe one day I'll get to vote in person.

Mostly, I'm just so happy about the election, the huge, record voter turnout and the final result. I really feel that whatever happens to the US deeply affects the rest of the world, and Canada especially. I think what happened yesterday means better times ahead for both countries. I also respected McCain for his speech and the sincerity with which he delivered it. Those were good words.

I don't usually discuss politics on this blog, but this is so important to me that I broke my rule. Now I'm done. For another 4 years, if not longer.

Comments:
I'm with you! I'm thrilled about our new president, I don't normally blog my politics, and I broke that "rule" today because it just seemed to important not to.

Sorry--I'm just "too" excited, I guess. I meant "too" important.

I agree too! I don't talk politics on my blog either but I broke that rule if only for a few short sentences - it needed to be said. Thank you for saying it too. Canada was indeed watching :)

I just pray for peace in the world. Mr. Obama has no experience in foreign politics and little experience in domestic politics. So much has happened in secret and by whatever group has backed him that I worry about Mr. Obama's agenda (or if he even has one now that he's met his goal of winning the election for his handlers)...Diana

Yes, Diana, but he is an intelligent, thoughtful man. We didn't have this before. He didn't win the election for his handlers, he won it for himself and for all of us.
I hope people can get past their upset fealings and truly experience this moment.

I broke my own rule, too, and posted a wee bit because I was so excited. For the first time in my voting life, I felt like I was voting for someone who truly inspired me - rather than voting for the lesser of two evils or against someone. I feel very, very hopeful.

Amy, even though I was a strong Obama supporter, I agree with you that McCain's concession speech was very classy. I actually liked McCain eight years ago when he ran against Bush, but I didn't recognize the McCain who ran in this campaign. As liberal as I am, It was hard to watch him and Palin flail about sometimes.

If only McCain's crowd had been as respectful whenever he mentioned Obama, as Obama's was when he mentioned McCain.

I dont see any good times ahead and I predict very bad times ahead for our beloved USA. I dont wish this to happen but history tends to repeat itself. He also is as radical as you can get with lots of socialist "big government"ideas. The only thing in our favor is that there is no money to put forth all these programs he wants to start so I guess he will have to raise everyones taxes. If he taxes big business who do you think the taxes will trickle down to? The working middle class of course. Its basic ecomonics. If he lets the Bush tax cuts expire then EVERYONES taxes will go up. This man might have made history but he also will make history as being the worst president we ever will have had after his 4 years in office. I dont know how all of his supporters are blinded by his "celebrity like" status not to see the real man that consorts with the likes of terrorists, radicals and criminals. Everyone seems to forget the appeal Hitler had to the youth of his country and he was also backed by lots of Hollywood actors and Joseph Kennedy was also a Nazi sympathizer. Obama has no experience and has never even balanced a budget in his life because hes never had a real job. Martin Luther King said that he dreamed of a day where his children wouldnt be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Everyone who voted for Obama did the opposite because the man has no character whatsoever and they based their vote on him being HALF black. He's biracial remember. When the sh*t hits the fan or if something bad happens I know who I voted for and I told you so. The other bad thing is that the people that saw him for what he really was will have to suffer for all the stupid people that drank the Kool-Aide and believed this liar. I dont have a blogger account so this is why I am anonymous-JR
Oh and please dont say McCain wasnt respectful because he was and he even apologized to Obama when people called him by his middle name. I didnt think and apology was owed because it is his name for goodness sake! And how about all the Obama supporters that wore shirts calling Sarah Palin the C word? Forgot about that? McCain is a real American Hero who survived years of torture in a Hanoi prison. What kind of hero is Obama? He even called Palin a lipstick wearing pig. You liberals seem to forget that it goes both ways. You claim to be so tolerant but all you did was rip apart Mrs Palin and her family. For what? Maybe you should have looked in your own backyard to see how many times Joe Biden got history wrong saying Roosevelt was around when the 1929 stock market crashed and actually came on TV! There was no TV and Hoover was president in 1929 but you wont hear the liberal media talk about Biden or Obama because they had an agenda. If you all want Socialism and communism so badly (they were actually waving around the red flag with a hammer and sickle in front of the White house celebrating Obamas win) go over to Europe or Russia. Socialism wont work here as it has failed everywhere else and I cant see this great nation built on the hard work of immigrants and its rights protected by millions of veterans who fought for it to have it turn into a Socialist hell which is what Obama will do. God help this country because we are going to need it. Wake up!!

What a strange place for a rant.

Ms Singer- your blog is sweet and lovely, and your magazine brings joy to my life. Thank you for joining in America's celebration.

Its not a rant, just the facts. Others are allowed to express their feelings and I am just expressing mine (as a US citizen which I am still allowed to do last time I checked). I also enjoy Knitty.com. People can have opposing viewpoints and still like and respect one another. Not all of America is celebrating because over 58 million people voted for McCain.

HA! I guess that's why you usually don't talk politics on your blog. Love you Amy! and your blog. :)

Yep, I think WOW is a very good sentiment.

Myself, I also left election day with a lot of respect for both presidential candidates...and wishing they had both exhibited more of it along the way. I for one feel respect, honesty and knowledge get you further than mindless propaganda and mudslinging every time. Can you imagine where the entire country could be right now if those 2 full years of campaigning had been held on a much higher level?

SIGH. Dare to dream I guess.

Joining you in hopefulness Ms. Amy!

I am absolutely thrilled, too. I think this is a hopeful new day for America. I was seriously thinking of joining you there in Canada if it didn't go this way -- I'm tired of feeling like I don't really understand/agree with so many of my fellow Americans when it comes to politics. This is good, good, good.

I will add that this is the first time that I (and some others I know) feel like I voted for someone, rather than against the other guy. I believe in Obama. I am worried for him, though, because people like me are creating enormous expectations for him. I have to remember that patience is going to be necessary.

Also, I was in Grant Park here in Chicago for the big event and it was so exciting!!

Love your positive tone of voice on the whole election issue. It's hard to decide how to handle political conversations on blogs and such. For me, the knitty.com community represents a lot of what's good in this world. You have to be an optimist to be a knitter--otherwise, how would you believe that a ball of string could become a yummy little something? Whatever our political leanings, looking for solutions instead of bemoaning problems is going to be the way out/forward. Here's to knitty.com as a force for good in the universe!

I live in Australia, and like the rest of the world, we are THRILLED to have Obama in the house! The results came in during our working day, so we either kept CNN on the telly or checked the web for continuous updates - our local TV stations even had a pre-dinner election special, for the first time ever for a foreign election. The thing that amazes me is the carry on about "voter turn-out" - in Australia voting is compulsory, and only through that will you ever have true democracy. You are fined if you don't vote. So enjoy that warm, fuzzy feeling you get from casting a ballot, and remember it when the next time rolls around, too!

I think you need to keep your rule and not discuss your political views. Republicans are knitters too.

TO Anonymous,
Yes this is a free country and you and the rest of us can express ourselves. This was an acrymonious 8 years for various reasons and we all have to take a deep breath and wish our new President-elect and our country the best no matter what our political persuasion is or was. What has happened in this country is a wonderful thing; 45 years ago those who had Obama's skin color were being hung from trees in the South and reviled. Let us all bless this country and those who had the strength to transcend that horrible era and all the citizens of our great country. Stop the rants and the hatred and give our best. For those of you who are worried and scared, please have confidence that Obama has good people working with him like Warren Buffett, Paul Volker, and more.

On one hand, I'm trying to feel empathy for folks like anonymous, because I felt so horribly betrayed 8 years ago when the election was given to Bush Jr.
On the other hand, Obama was actually elected by the people, and I think everyone has to respect that.
Here's hoping that more people than not can get over themselves and feel the love- anyone who says they get any kind of bad vibe from Obama just isn't opening up- that man has the best energy I have ever seen in a politician in my lifetime- and that's not the Kool-Ade talking!

The worst part of the last eight years has been the hatefulness. Nancy Pelosi, Henry Reid, etc. calling OUR President a Nazi, a villain, a killer, a thief. I truly hope that the opposition party this time will show more class... and help solve problems instead of the name-calling that occupied all the Democrats' time. And say what you want about President Bush and Republican party leaders: they did not insult Democrats. Please, Democrats, don't let yourselves continue to be consumed by hatred.

A sure sign of the hatred referred to above is "Bush stole the election"... for which you have not one shred of evidence. Grow up.
