WWW for April 1.5, 2009

April 1.5 because none of this is April Fool's madness. It's all true. As far as we know.

Are you one of those lucky knitting geeks with an iPhone or iPod Touch? Check out these knitting apps [some free, some not]:

Stitch Counter can manage up to 6 projects at a time, counting whatever unit you want [decreases? increases? rows? up to you!]

Stitch Minder, the original free app for knitting -- simple and elegant. Big fan base.

Measure gauge without a ruler. Brought to you by the lovely folks at Ashland Sky.

Knitting Yarn Calculator helps you figure out how much yarn you'll need if you want to knit a drop-sleeve sweater.

Looking for a not-inexpensive vacation idea? [Lucky you!] How about a cruise? Find knitting cruises, handspinning cruises and there's even a crochet cruise that leaves this Sunday!

This YouTube video of LED-covered sheep has made the rounds on the internet. Me, I don't believe it's live-action footage. There's some serious computer work involved to get those sheep moving in unison. But still, it's neat to watch.

A neat-looking folding travel wheel...the Bee. Has anyone spun on one of these yet? What do you think of it?

Adorable finger puppets to knit.

A new blog from the Knitting Out Loud audiobook people!

The author of this great article in the latest issue of Knitty is having a fundraiser. She's running a raffle on her blog to support the Canadian Cancer society -- and her husband's ride in the Ride to Survive, from Kelowna to Vancouver in one day. Prizes include Seasilk, Wollmeise [!] and more.

Have a great week and I hope the weather is fabulous where you are! My scooter is out of winter storage and I'll be on 2 energy-efficient wheels from now until the snow falls again next fall. Let's hear it for 70 mpg!

Another iphone app I like for knitting is "Knitty Bag" which lets you keep track of your knitting needles. Knitty Bag also has a glossary of oft-used abbreviations in the knitting world.

I wish for two things:
1. an app would combine all these apps into one... I like Stitch Minder.
2. an app with useful descriptions of knitting abbreviations (Knitty Bag's glossary is good if you just need a reminder that BO stands for Bind off, but wouldn't it be great if it told you how?)

Anyone want to teach me how to make one of these apps???

There is another iPhone application called iKnit Needle Sizer. It takes the place of a standard needle gauge to find the size of a knitting needle or crochet hook. It can size knitting needles from 1.75 mm (US 00) up to 25 mm (US 50). It costs $0.99. Cat Bordhi showed it to me when I was in Madrona and I installed it on my iPhone upon returning to Toronto; I have used it several times since.

I used the Bee at Stitches West and enjoyed it--good for long draw. It had a bit of a learning curve for getting the wheel started/going in the right direction, but then it was lots of fun, except for the scooting across the tile floor. They had to tear me away.

Amy, I have to tell you something that will probably just convince you I'm nuts. I've been having trouble sleeping lately so last night I decided to take some benadryl before I went to bed because the "marked drowsiness" was what I was after. I'm cheap though, so I had generic benadryl. I have no idea what color real benadryl is, but the generic ones I have are pink. Really, really intensely bright pink. I opened the bottle, looked inside, and said, "Wow. That's really pink! That's like...like...Amy colored!"

I don't care if the sheep video is fake that was cool. Thanks it made me smile on this very wet very gray day in Washington.

sheep video is not faked, at least not most of it. it is time lapse so they could move the flocks

Amy- sorry to send this as a comment but I can't find your email anywhere- I just heard that you Twittered my proposal for the Dream Assignent / Heifer Project-- thank you so much for your support- I think you're going to put me over the top in the finals- I can scarcely breathe!

"Winter storage." I don't think we have that in Texas. What could it mean? For that matter, what exactly is winter?
