Keep your arms and shoulders sparkly and warm or substitute a simpler yarn for everyday wear! This raglan shrug is knit from the bottom up, with a lacy back so the back of your dress [or your back!] can peek through.

The ruffled cuffs flare over the base of the hand, and the sleeves alone would make fun "gloves" for a formal. Just stop knitting a bit short of the desired length, add some ribbing and cast off. You may want to thread elastic through the ribs to keep them up.

The ruffle at the cuff is an adaptation of the pleated gore in "Knitted Ruffles," by Pam Allen, Interweave Knits, Summer 2002, while the lozenge lace in the back comes from the first edition of Vogue Knitting.

Work inc round, as follows:
K to 1 st before marker, m1, k1, sl marker, k1, m1, work around.

Work 8[7, 6, 5] rounds even.

Repeat these 9[8, 7, 6] rounds 13[15, 17, 19] times; 58[66, 74, 82] sts.

Work even until sleeves measures 18.5 inches or desired length, from beginning of St st [row 17 of ruffle]. Ruffle should flare over base of hand.

Next round, work to 4 sts before marker, BO 8 sts, finish round even. Place live sts on scrap yarn.

Make a second identical sleeve.

Body

Using smaller needle, CO 102[118, 134, 150] sts. Do not join.

Establish ribbing as follows: k1, *p4, k4*, ending with p4, k1.

Knitting the first and last st of each row to form a selvage, work 3 more rows of ribbing as established. On the next row, maintaining the ribs and selvage sts as established, work 16[19, 22, 25] sts, pm, work 70[80, 90, 100] sts, pm, work remaining 16[19, 22, 25] sts.

Note: the two sets of sts outside the markers are the front and underarms of the shrug; these will be in St st. The center 70[80, 90, 100] sts are the back; these will worked be in the lozenge pattern.

Change to larger needles. K1, p100[116, 132, 148], k1.

Establish the lozenge pattern on the center back sts and St st outside the markers as follows:

RS:K16[19, 22, 25], sl marker, work row 1 of lozenge pattern, sl marker, k k16[19, 22, 25].

Continue as established through 1 complete repeat [16 rows] of the lozenge pattern, then work 3 more rows, ending with row 3. If a longer back is desired, work additional 16 row reps, ending with row 3.

Armhole shaping

In patt, work to 8 sts before first marker. BO 8 sts. Purl across to 2nd marker. BO 8 sts. Work to end of row.

Join sleeves

K 8[11, 14, 17], pm, k sts from first sleeve, pm, work back sts in patt [row 5 of lozenge pattern], pm, k sts from second sleeve, pm, k to end of row -- 186[218, 250, 282] sts on needle.

Raglan Shaping

Next and all WS rows: K1, p across to 1 st from end, k1.

At the same time, keeping the center back sts [between the second and third markers] in patt, work raglan shaping on RS rows as follows:

*Work to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sl marker, SSK, rep across from * [8 sts decreased each round].

Repeat these 2 rows 5[8, 11, 14] times more, until only 2 sts remain before the first marker and after the fourth.

From now on, work these 2 sts even, continuing other decreases as established [6 sts decreased each round]. You may want to remove the first and fourth markers at this point.

Repeat these rows until 36[38, 40, 42] sts remain. Leave these sts on the needle.

Using smaller needle, pick up 48[51, 54, 57] sts up left front, work 36[38, 40, 42] live sts in patt, pick up 48[51, 54, 57] sts down right front --132[140, 148, 156] sts total. Beginning on WS, work 4 rows in p4,k4 rib.

BO in pattern.

FINISHING
