This belted sweater is far from the retro look of its namesake, but the 1970s streetwise cop was certainly an inspiration.

The sweater is worked with columns of leafy plants. A ribbed shawl collar circles the neck.

Wear it to bust some bad guys, or just to look good.

Using larger needle, with RS facing and beginning at lower front corner of right front, pick up and k 3 sts for every 4 rows along lower front edge to bottom of neckline shaping (marked with safety pin), 1 st for each row along right neckline edge, place marker (this marker will be designated "right marker") 1 st for each row and each bound off st along back neckline, place marker (this marker will be designated "left marker"), 1 st for each row along left neckline edge (to safety pin), and 3 sts for every 4 rows along lower left front edge.

Count the number of sts on your needle. You need to have a multiple of 6 sts + 3: decide how many sts must be increased or decreased to reach an appropriate number. Increase or decrease these sts evenly over the next row.

Next Row [WS]: P3, [k3, p3] to end.
This row sets 3x3 Rib for the collar. Work in 3x3 Rib as set throughout the rest of the Collar.

FINISHING

Block pieces as desired.

Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew sleeve and side seams; when sewing sleeve seams, sew lower 3 inches of cuff with seam allowances on RS, so that they will not show when cuff is turned back.

Belt Loops
Try on sweater. Tie belt around waist, and use safety pin to mark location of lower edge of belt at side seam of sweater.

Measure length from lower edge of sweater to pin; record this measurement. Decide on locations of 4 belt loops around sweater, 1 on each front and 2 on back. Choose locations either in the middle of stitch motifs (as shown), or in the columns of knit sts between motifs.

At each of these locations, measure and mark the point where the bottom of the belt loop will be (based on your earlier side seam measurement).

Make each belt loop as follows:
Using smaller needle, pick up and k 4 sts at desired point.
Row 1 [WS]: K1, p2, k1.
Row 2 [RS]: K4.
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times more. BO all sts.

Sew bound off edge of belt loop to sweater. Weave in rem ends.
